Eating Better for the Holidays

Image

As the holiday season draws closer, one of the hardest ways to maintain your healthy lifestyle during this time of year is to eat right. Even if you have been doing great on your diet, the holidays can still lead to overindulgence and weight gain. One of the reasons for is this is that food seems to be extra plentiful during celebrations with plates and plates of delicious goodies. Plus, the majority of food served during the holidays is usually loaded with fat, calories, and sugar. If you are not careful, your health can suffer.

In order to stay healthier over the holidays, here are some tips for eating better:

  • Make Wise Choices – Instead of reaching for things like pie, stuffing, gravy, eggnog, bread pudding, and ham or beef, choose healthier options like turkey, chicken, fresh salads, and steamed vegetables. It’s OK to have some holiday treats, but it is important to choose your calories wisely. Keep track of your calories as much as possible so you know how much you are eating.
  • Bring Your Own Food – During many holiday celebrations, there is often not many healthy choices. By bringing a healthier dish of your own, you can give yourself and others that option. Plus, there are plenty of traditional recipes that can be modified in order to be healthier.
  • Control Your PortionsSmaller portions allow you to sample many different foods while keeping the amount of calories down. Also, it is best to chew your food slowly and take small bites to avoid overindulging. When you are done with your meal, it might be helpful to leave the room in order to keep from going back for more.
  • Avoid Excessive Alcohol Consumption – The holidays are notorious for alcohol but alcoholic drinks are high in calories and have hardly any nutritional value. Plus, it dehydrates your body. Practice moderation, if it is impossible for you to avoid alcohol then try and drink a glass of water in between drinks. But the safest bet is to stick to plain water and your body will thank you for it.
  • Stay Active – Moderation is critical when it comes to eating over the holidays but so is staying active. Keeping exercising regularly and get moving!

UNDOING THE KNOTS

Image

Have you ever asked yourself what are your intentions in life? Whether it is your career, your love life, fitness goals or perhaps it is your finances or spiritual goals. What are your intentions?

We should all start by defining our intentions. The broad definition of intentions is “an aim or a plan” of something. We all know without an aim or a plan our goals are a lot harder to achieve. Defining our intentions can help us streamline our lives. Just think about your intentions as your “Whys”.

Why do I want to be a CEO of a company? Why do I want to lose 20 pounds? Why do I want better communication with my mom? Why do I want to run a marathon? Knowing your feelings about your whys and streamlining your intentions will assist you in taking greater control of your life.

Understanding your aims can transform your dreams into reality. It can transform your plans into action. It can even transform your fears into hope and possibilities. It can turn your will into results.

Tomorrow, when you start your day, ask yourself what are the things that you DON’T want to do today? I am pretty sure if you start your day by asking yourself the things you do not want to do, you’d be more inclined to refine the things you want to do.

Now that you’re clear about your intentions, set a plan that excites you. Something that will make you smile and make you feel as if you made today count! Look forward to it everyday; even if you only have 20 minutes to dedicate to it and see how your life becomes more rewarding each day. Intentions are a powerful tool to living your most authentic life.

How to get the bikini body you’ve always wanted

Image

Bikini season is coming and unfortunately, after a couple of days…ahem, weeks…of indulging for the holidays, you’re likely looking at your itty bitty, teeny weeny, yellow polka dot bikini with fear and loathing. There’s no way you’ll look good in that come summer, right?

Wrong!

Here’s how you can slim down, tone up and shed those extra few pounds before you have to don…dun, dun, dun…the bikini.

Up Your Water Intake

This is one simple thing you can do to start detoxifying your body and shedding the extra weight. A lot of it is actually water weight, because so many of our holiday foods are chock full of salt and sodium. It seems as though drinking more water to get rid of water weight is counterintuitive, but it’s not. The extra water will help flush out the salt in your body, which will help you retain less water. ‘

Nix The Carbs

Okay, so you don’t have to eliminate carbs completely. But swapping rice or pasta for more veggies and using whole wheat products instead of white are all steps you can take to start getting rid of the extra fat around your midsection.

Start Walking

Walking is an easy exercise that you can do almost anytime, anywhere. You can do it on your lunch break at work (walk around the office a few times), in the morning or even at home if you have a treadmill. When done correctly, walking will not only burn calories, it will also help tone your bod. Walk quickly, keeping your arms at a ninety degree angle. Maintain good posture and suck your stomach in!

Slow Down When Eating

It takes twenty minutes for your brain to figure out that your stomach has enough food in it. So if you cram your face with an entire meal in ten, you’ll think you’re still hungry and eat way more than you really should. Portion your meal out with how much you want to eat and then take at least twenty full minutes eating it. Sip water and set your fork down a few times in between bites.

Get A Pedicure

Getting a pedicure won’t help you lose weight, but it will help you feel more fabulous in your bikini. Not only will a pedicure make you feel fantastic, you’ll love looking at the summery splash of color on your tootsies. Having gorgeous looking toes does wonders for your self-esteem and will encourage you in your endeavor to get the bikini body you’ve always wanted!

Delicious and Nutritious Soups for Fall

With fall upon us we are gravitating towards the comforts of this season. We are enjoying more time at home, bundling up in sweaters, and getting ready to enjoy a bit of comfort food. If you define this season with comfort food then you are not alone. Who doesn’t love a hot bowl of soup on a cool fall day? If you love your soup then you’ll be thrilled to know that there are some healthy options in this category.

Veggie Love

The best part of a good veggie soup is that it’s fat free and loaded with tons of fiber and very little calories. There are many vegetable soup recipes out there, but this one is fat free:

Start with 2 cans of tomato sauce and 1 larger can of whole tomatoes, throw into pan and turn to medium heat.

Chop up and throw in as many vegetables that you like including:

  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Carrots
  • Green
  • Beans
  • Zucchini
  • Onions
  • Cabbage
  • Celery

Throw in two packages of fat free chicken or vegetable bouillon powder and seasonings including dill, garlic, salt, and pepper.

Simmer until all veggies are cooked and soft, usually about 45 minutes or longer on a low heat. Enjoy!

Add A Little Meat

You can also go for a low fat meat based soup. This is so filling that even the men in your life will enjoy it and yet it’s low fat. This is loaded with protein, fiber, and has the right blend of vegetables. We call this Turkey Tuscan Soup and you will love it!

In a separate pan brown a package of ground turkey and some onions. Drain and set aside.

Start with a box of low sodium and fat free chicken broth, put in pot with some water and start on a medium heat. Add in cooked ground turkey and onion mixture and get ready to throw in other ingredients.

As the soup starts to simmer on a medium heat throw in spinach, cooked acorn squash, and a can of drained cannellini beans. Throw in your favorite seasonings, ones that work well with this include basil, oregano, garlic, salt and pepper.

Let the soup cook on a medium heat until blended well, about 1 hour on a lower heat.

This is so substantial that it doesn’t feel low fat and everyone will gobble it on up!

Soup to Warm Your Days

Many of us enjoy soup but the versions that are out there are full of fat. You can cut back on the fat for almost any soup recipe. You can also bump up the nutritional quotient if you add in plenty of chopped vegetables, beans for fiber, and a low fat and lean protein. Think about what will help to make it substantial and add to making it a healthy option. Cut out the fat very simply by getting rid of high sodium or high fat bases or broths, opt for low fat and low sodium versions or use a tomato sauce base.

If you put some thought into it you are bound to enjoy the soup more as you will know that it’s good for you too! This is the perfect time of year for soup so enjoy it and just be smart about how you prepare it. Soup is good for you and can help to warm you up on those brisk fall days!

Fall Into Good Habits

Put down the cider and donuts and step away from them! It’s about that time of year where our need for comfort foods and busy calendars tend to take over our every thought. We are coming upon some great times ahead with the Holidays and all that this entails. The problem however is that this is one calorie laden nightmare when it comes to your health and fitness regimen. Rather than trudging through another failure of a Holiday season fitness wise, why not fall into good habits?

Get Started Now

Learn to embrace healthy eating habits now. Not only will this help you to get into good habits but it will give you a nice advantage when you sit down with some of the best meals of the year. Think of how much sweeter your life would be if you knew how to practice willpower and portion control in the here and now. Then you would be well trained to say no to that second piece of pumpkin pie or that fifth cookie. Good habits now will benefit you later!

Sure it’s always hard to change up the way that you do things, but it can be done. By starting good habits now you are setting yourself up for success. More people gain weight around this time of year than any other time. Don’t be the statistic! Good habits such as healthy eating, proper portion control, and regular workouts will be greatly beneficial beyond the Holidays.

Build It Up for Great Results

Start slowly if it’s been awhile and just get on the treadmill or the elliptical for thirty minutes at a time. Build up on your time and then add in weights to add an element of strength training to the mix. Sign up for a class that will help you to burn some serious calories like kickboxing or aerobics. Fitness can be fun so find something that interests you and there is a greater likelihood that you will stick with it. Everyone struggles and needs a little push sometimes but if you get started now then the good habits will carry on through the most important time of year.

You are going to be spending more time with family, going to more social engagements, and let’s face it eating the best food of the year! You can still enjoy these things but you will do so with restraint. If you start to see progress you are going to want to do everything you can to protect that and ensure that you maintain it moving forward. With the right level of exercise in your life then you will get that edge and remember the truth to that old adage “a moment on the lips, forever on the hips”.

Get That Edge You’ve Always Wanted

Falling into good habits now will not only help you through the Holiday season but get you well trained beyond. You are going to like how you feel and be thrilled with what you see! If you are diligent with the workouts and learn the right way to eat then you are going to get some serious power behind you.

It does take a shift in mindset and some serious dedication but it can be done. You will feel great and find that nothing (including that dessert table) presents you with a challenge that you can’t handle anymore!
