Turning to Food For Short Term and Long Term Health

There are so many wonderful medications out there right now, but have you ever felt that you were almost over medicated? So many of us turn to medicine and are prescribed medicine for a variety of health conditions. Though sometimes medicine is absolutely necessary, sometimes you may find that a more natural remedy can do the trick.

If you are sick of taking pills everyday and want to try something that may offer you a healthy alternative, there are answers out there. You can turn to the very food that you eat to offer healing power and to help you feel better faster. Though you always want to seek out medical attention and ensure that your health condition doesn’t absolutely require medication, you will quickly find that there is great healing powers in proper nutrition. So put aside that pill for a moment and consider what you can do on your own to offer very natural remedies.

The Healing Power of Food

Did you know that garlic and onions offer natural antibacterial properties? Are you aware that blueberries and broccoli contain antioxidants within them that can help to naturally boost your immune system? These are the sorts of things that you can gain when you eat the right foods. Though many find that supplements are necessary to offset the appropriate servings needed in a day, the food that you eat has some amazing healing power.

When you feel sick, it can be quite helpful to turn to citrus fruits for a nice boost of Vitamin C. You may also find it helpful to include a food such as sweet potatoes as they are loaded with Vitamin C and beta carotene. Knowing these sorts of things can help to prevent you from getting sick in the first place. The very food that we eat can offer us tremendous healing power and make us healthier and stronger.

Trying the Natural Route Rather Than Medication

Yes there are certain medications that are an absolute must and those should never be ignored. However if you are trying to live a healthier and cleaner life, it always pays off to go to a natural way of healing things. Though medication has many side effects in certain instances, the foods that we eat can only help to keep us healthier in the long run.

When you are eating natural foods from the earth, you are far less likely to feel slowed down, lethargic, or exhausted. Your immune system is boosted and therefore you are better able to fight off germs and illnesses that come your way. When you eat processed foods you tend to get sluggish and feel weighed down by all of the fat, additives, preservatives, and unnatural ingredients. You truly are what you eat and therefore eating the right foods can really help to make you a healthier person!

Seeking Guidance But Taking Control of Your Health

Always talk to your doctor before you start any regimen, including turning to foods for health support. If you are on medication that is absolutely necessary, then don’t just stop taking it without talking to them first. You may however find that proper nutrition can really be of help in the short term in boosting your immune system. It can also be quite helpful in the long term when it comes to preventing disease from setting in.

Prevention is key and when you eat the right foods you are providing your body with what it needs. Not only do the right foods act as natural remedies for what may ail you, but they help to prevent problematic health conditions as well. You are going to feel much healthier, stronger, and enjoy a longer and more enjoyable life if you start to embrace proper nutrition—and you are going to find that you likely won’t even need as much medication anymore either!

Kicking Your Workout Into High Gear With an Effective Boot Camp

The problem with many women’s workouts is that they are quite honestly too easy. Sure cardio on the the treadmill or the elliptical is fine, but is this really going to change your body? If you want to change your body and get results then you are going to have to work for it. In order to get there a great avenue well worth trying is boot camp.

There are many different types and forms of boot camp programs, but they are all highly effective. These are often intense programs that mix cardio with strength training and give you just the challenge that you need. What happens when you partake in this type of program is that you shed fat and build muscle—and that’s the type of combination that changes a body shape and equals true and long lasting success!

Nothing to Fear and Everything to Gain

When you think of boot camp you may have the vision of an actual drill sergeant shouting out commands. Though this won’t be like a day in the army, it most certainly will push you and challenge you. This is a good thing! There is absolutely nothing to fear, even if this is well outside of your comfort zone. You may feel a little apprehensive at first, but you are going to love it.

The thing to remember with boot camp programs is that they give you so much to gain. You are going to build muscle, you are going to shed and burn away fat, and you are going to participate in some truly challenging and intense drills. At NYC Adventure Boot Camp we specialize in women’s fitness. We know which problem areas to target. This will take you well beyond what you thought were your limits and give your body an intense shot of revolutionary exercise. This is what your body wants and craves, particularly if you want to change the shape of it forever.

Push Yourself to the Limits and Love the Results

Many women are afraid of boot camp for a variety of reasons. They may have heard horror stories or have this terrible vision in their minds. The thing to remember is that this type of program is intense for a reason. It helps you to push yourself to the limits and see that this is what you need to do in order to change. Stacy Papakostas does not believe in yelling at her campers, we aim to give you a competitive but supportive experience.

Do you want to lose weight or need to add muscle? The only way that’s going to happen is if you challenge your body. Yes you can get that through other workouts but boot camp programs are the most consistent and give you the fastest results. Yes you are likely going to work harder than you ever have, but you are going to get some killer results that you have never experienced before as well.

Find Out That You Are Capable of Much More Than You Thought

When you partake in a boot camp type of program you are not only going to get a lot out of it physically but mentally as well. You are going to find that you are capable of so much more than you thought you were. You will see that you can push yourself hard and get results and that your comfort zone was so much further out than you realized.

Much of what we get out of a fitness program has to do with the mental aspects as much as the physical ones. It’s truly important to reap the physical rewards, but you need to give yourself a mental break as well. If you can get the endorphins going and relieve stress through exercise, then you are going to achieve true and overall health. Boot camp is a great vehicle to get you there and so if you want to be physically and mentally stronger version of yourself, then this is the way to do it!

Beat the boring gym routine with an all women’s boot camp.

Participating in an outdoor boot camp for women as a group – in comparison to jogging on a treadmill in front of the television or the same repetitive moves on a stair master – is a no-brainier to everyone except for the woman on the treadmill.  Besides, the spirit just doesn’t seem to respond as well to what is going on.

Being outdoors in a park, lets say like Central Park can turn a boring and routine fitness routine into an energetic motivating experience.   Boot camps held outside are not only fun but allows for more strenuous workouts.  Results? More weight lost and a better feeling inside with a serious boost to self-esteem.

There is something about exercising in the sunny outdoors that can make a person feel better, as sunlight offers benefits that are good for us.  Nothing can beat that early morning feel of the sun rising or the smell of the outdoors as the sun comes in into the city. The morning rays are the best, allowing us to produce more Vitamin D – alias the “sunshine vitamin” – which has been found good to fight cancer.  However, this goes against the theory that we need to lather ourselves with sunscreen when outside as it blocks its production.  (Everything in moderation, including sunshine) Four separate studies have proven that we need more than milk and Vitamin D supplements  for conditions like lymphoma and cancers of the prostrate, skin cancer, lung cancer, and especially colon cancer.

Late in the evening is another good time to exercise outdoors, after the heat subsides.  Most boot camps will offer choices of classes at different times – particularly mornings and evenings – for running, jogging, and many heavy duty workouts.  An advantage of taking one of these classes is that, for some reason, a person approaches an outdoor activity differently than when inside.  That same feeling can be found when camping in state or national parks as in comparison to the good ol’ back yard.  It is still okay yet there is something missing.  Overall, this can cause a change on how a woman will approach her activity.

Outdoor boot camps allow women to push outside their comfort zones, further than where they normally would stop.  The wide open space is motivating allowing you more movement and a sense of freedom that you will not find, closed in at a gym.  This process can produce faster, positive results than with other more sluggish exercise programs.  You get out what you put in, is a good motto to follow.  If you only want to lose five pounds a year, then slowly walk ten minutes a day.  It is still a positive goal, and more than many can do with certain health conditions.

Combining fun groups of women who are marathon professionals and women who have never attended a boot camp for fitness has a comradeship about it, with each woman helping the other as sisters.  Helping to make good choices with nutrition and proper boot camp exercises can easily be set in stone these early days, with the outdoor boot camp for women setting the pace. Lots of laughter and a fun atmosphere with NYC Adventure Boot Camp comes from a family atmosphere on friendship, providing a good feeling that has been known to become contagious.

The benefits of drinking water

Drinking a healthy amount of water is vital to your health. You can never imagine just by changing this simple step, you gain tremendous health benefits, and sometimes you can even throw away your migraine medicine or pain killer. Before you can appreciate the benefits of water to your health, let’s review the role of water in human body.

Functions of Water in The Body
The human body is anywhere from 55% to 78% water depending on body size. A rule of thumb, 2/3 of body is consists of water, and it is the main component of human body. Did you know that your tissues and organs are mainly made up of water?

  • Muscle consists of 75% water
  • Brain consists of 90% of water
  • Bone consists of 22% of water
  • Blood consists of 83% water

The functions of water in human body are vital. The water:

  • Transpsort nutrients and oxygen into cells
  • Moisturizes the air in lungs
  • Helps with metabolism
  • Protect our vital organ
  • Helps our organs to absorb nutrients better
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Detoxifies
  • Protect and moisturizes our joints

Every cell in your body needs water from head to toe. That is why it is so important to drink enough fluid. Take for example, brain consists of 90% of water, if you do not supply enough water to your body, your brain cannot function well, and you will get headache or migraine. Hence, next time, if you feel fatigue and headache, it may be the sign of dehydration.

The Harmful Effects Result from Dehydration:

  • Tiredness
  • Migraine
  • Constipation
  • Muscle cramps
  • Irregular blood-pressure
  • Kidney problems
  • Dry skin
  • 20% dehydrated – Risk of death

Symptoms of Dehydration

Here are some of the symptoms that you need more water:

  • Dark Urine – Dark Yellow or Orange in Color: Urine is generally pale yellow to clear when you have sufficient water intake. Dark color or smell strong indicates that you need to drink more water.
  • Dry Skin: Skin is the largest body organ and requires its share of water.
  • Thirst: Thirst is the most obvious sign that you’re already dehydrated. It is always a good practice to drink more water when your are not thirsty, don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
  • Hunger: Most people mistaken hungry is the indication to eat more, whereas in actual fact, you may be dehydrated. So before you have your meal, grab a glass of water.
  • Fatigue: Water is a source of enegy, give you a boost in energy.

How much water should you drink a day to avoid dehydration? A common approach is drinking 8 glasses of water a day, is it sufficient?

There is no clear-cut answer as to how much water to drink per day, because it depends upon a number of factors like your health condition, your activity status, the climatic conditions, physical size, your weight and your environment etc. You lose quite a lot of water through sweating, exhaling and urinating. In hot weather, you tend to lose more water through sweating, in cold condition, you tend to urine more. In the event of sickness like flu and diarrhoea, you tend to lose fluid. When you weigh more, your body needs more fluid for the muscle, organ, bone etc.

There are many recommendations advise that you drink 8 glasses (250ml/8 ounce per glass = total of approx 2 litre) of water a day. Is drinking 8 glasses of water enough? Remove the environmental, climatic factors and your activity level out of the equation, the amount of water intake is vary according to your weight. A more accurate estimation is to drink at least half your body weight (in pounds) in ounces of water. Let’s illustrate with the following example:

1. You weigh 160 pounds.160 ÷ 2 = 80 (amount of water to drink in ounce per day)

Answer: Drink 80 ounce of water per day.

If you are using kilograms in unit, divide the kilograms by 30, this gives you the water to drink a day in litre.

2. You weigh 75kg 75 ÷ 30 = 2.5 (amount of water to drink in litre per day)

Answer: Drink 2.5 litre of water per day.

Tips for drinking water: Spread the water out evenly throughout the day. If the amount of water is 80 ounces, spread the water out by drinking one 10-ounce glass every hour for eight hours, which is about drinking 8 glasses of water per day.

For exercise, drink 1-2 cup of water 30 minutes before exercise. It helps to replenish the fluid loss and fuel the muscle during the exercise.

Since other factors like your activity level and the environment conditions do affect your water intake, another way to know if you’re getting enough water, watch your urine. It should be light yellow colored or clear. If it is dark or strong smelling, it is time to drink more water. Also watch for other signs of dehydration such as fatigue, headaches, and difficulty concentrating. If you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated.

Tips on Getting Yourself to Drink Enough Water

Getting yourself to habits of drinking enough water is not easy. You will be surprised that the reason that people not drinking enough water is the inconvenience or extra trips of wash room visits. However, weighing the consequences and the benefits of drinking water, health should put ahead of inconveniences. If you don’t like the taste of plain water, try to add a squeeze of lemon or lime.

Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning. You may find that you no longer need your morning cup of coffee. One reason why people feel tired in the morning is they are dehydrated after a long night sleep!

Cold Water or Lemon Water: It’s more pleasant to drink your water cold or added with little bit of flavour like lemon. You can throw a couple of ice cubes with a slice of lemon into it. As it is more pleasant to drink, this will help you get used to drinking water quicker and you will find yourself that drinking 8 glasses of water or even 10 glasses are not an issues anymore!

Drink a glass of water before, during and after meals. Many people mistake thirst for hunger. Drinking a glass of water will help you to stay in control of your eating, and therefore help to keep your weight in a healthy range. Moreover, drink water during the meals helps in digestion of the food.

Carry a bottle of water with measurement: Go and buy a bottle with measurement, it can be a 2 litre or litre bottle, doesn’t matter. The benefits are it serves as a reminder of your daily quota, example, make sure your 2 litre bottle of water is empty by end of the day if it is your daily quota. Also, it is convenient to carry a bottle when you are out.

Before-during-after exercise: Just like the meals, it’s recommended you drink water before you exercise. The fluids you lose during your exercise need to be replenished, so don’t forget to drink during your exercises. And of course after your exercises, just drink a glass or bottle of water.

Tea or Coffee: It’s hard to not drink coffee or tea at all if you already used to drink it. Tea and coffee has its health benefits too, but try to keep it to a minimum. It is for your own health after all.
