Preparing for Fall

As summer comes to a close and the kids head back to school, it’s time to think about the changing seasons. Fall is the perfect time to get outside and take advantage of the end of the warm weather. Before we know it, winter will be upon us and we’ll be spending much of our time indoors by the fireplace. However, the next few months will be a great time to exercise outside, even as the days get shorter. Fall usually brings moderate temperatures, temperatures that are perfect for all kinds of outdoor activities, including running, bike riding, hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, canoeing, swimming, and kayaking, just to name a few.

When the seasons change, it is helpful to keep a few tips in mind:

  • Prepare for the weather – As the temperatures change, be sure that you are prepared for the different conditions outside. Night time in the fall can get especially cold, so whatever activity you are participating in, be sure to pack extra warm clothing. Fall also can bring an increase in precipitation so it doesn’t hurt to have a rain jacket and rain pants. On the other hand, there might still be some hot days so bring sunscreen along. Dressing for outdoor activities can challenging in the fall, but you can never go wrong by wearing layers.
  • Mix It Up – The good news is that you don’t have to limit yourself to just one activity in the fall. Autumn is perfect for outdoor recreation like hiking and backpacking in case you want to view all of the beautiful leaves as they change colors. However, fall is also a good time to go pick apples or even get lost in a corn maze. There are also plenty of fall festivals happening all over in the country that offer unique experiences. Find out what kinds of events are available in your local area! Also a time where many races such as the color run or the zombie run, try and keep it fun.
  • Hydrate and Avoid Sweets – In order to stay healthy this fall, be sure to take care of your body by drinking plenty of water and avoiding large amounts of sugar. During the fall, it is easy to forget to stay hydrated because of the cooler temperatures. As the holidays draw closer, it is also tempting to indulge in all kinds of sweets. Be careful how much you eat! It is better to avoid the traps before they become problems that you have to work on.
